The trope of the white savior is one wherein a white protagonist is portrayed as a messiah or savior who is usually shown to have more knowledge and are able to learn the cultures of the nonwhite characters that they are saving in short amounts of time. In the wake of Avatar: Way of Water Being announced as the sequel to the original Avatar (2009 )   film directed by James Cameron, I will be talking about how the main protagonist Jake Sully, portrayed by Sam Worthington, perpetuates the white savior trope. Avatar takes place in the world of Pandora where an alien species called Na'vi live. Humans in the year 2154 have depleted the world's resources and so have set course towards other planets to harvest more. Humans are unable to withstand the planet's atmosphere so are tasked to pilot human/Na'vi bodies called avatars like mechas in Gundam or Pacific Rim. Jake Sully, a retired paralyzed former marine is tasked to take over his deceased twin's place in this operati...

When speaking about power and influence in the current age, the two most commonly viewed aspects of an individual would be race and gender. As these are two of the factors that are out of our control from birth, depending on the place or community we were brought up in, this could mean either a harder or easier time getting around. As the Amazon Prime show The Boys mirrors our real world quite closely, I will be using it to talk about modes of perpetuation and specifically how it handles depictions of masculinity.  The Boys is a show that will not shy away from showing darker topics as its main premise is a darkly satirical take on the superhero genre made popular in recent years with Disney's Marvel universe at the forefront of the industry. As a result of this, characters are shown to be more cynical and arrogant as a superpowered individual in real life probably would be with the heroes being shown to be people with god complexes. The embodiment of every toxic trait of a ...

Media content across many different platforms is able to convey and perpetuate ideologies for better or worse, and it is most prevalent through the medium of television shows. It is especially noticeable when one's narrative and the setting are based on our modern world as the societal norms would transfer over quite well. The show that I would like to analyze in this example would be the Amazon Prime show The Boys .  The Boys is a show that centers on a world where individuals blessed with superpowers are generally hailed as heroes and work for agencies. The biggest and most powerful corporation that employs these heroes is Vought International which puts them into a group called The Seven and is marketed as celebrities. When the cameras are rolling, the heroes are righteous and upright but behind the scenes, their true natures are corrupt, narcissistic, and evil. Our protagonists are a band of vigilantes who have vendettas against these Vought heroes and decide to team up to exp...

members of nickelback An example I would use for something that originally started as subversive or dangerous would be the genre of rock music. First being coined as "rock and roll" with musical roots in various genres such as blues, rhythm and blues, and country music, it was viewed as music that could be considered as multi-racial. Because the majority of rock and roll was performed by African American individuals during the heavily racially charged 1940s, the subversiveness of the rock genre might have not come from the content of the music, but rather from the people who were playing it. Two decades after from the 50s to 60s, white musicians were at the forefront of rock and roll with such notable figures as Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, and most notably the "King of Rock and Roll" Elvis Presley. The dangerousness of rock music to some degree could be attributed to how different it was to the predominant genre of music, crooning. Crooning was a soft and smooth s...
